Walking and Cycling

The Balmer Lawn has a stock of bicycles on site for hire. These can be pre-booked by calling reception on 01590 623116.
Walking, cycling and mountain biking are all very popular ways of exploring the beautiful New Forest National Park with its variety of wildlife. Bicycles are also available to hire locally at Trax bike hire.

With the absence of too many steep hills cycling can be as challenging or as easy as you want to make it. The large number of linked cycle routes means that significant distances can be covered without having to use busy roads.

Horse Riding

Several stables are located in and around Brockenhurst, pre-booking is advisable but there is no better way to see the "real” forest. With access being reasonably unrestricted, this is a great way of getting off the beaten track.

Two of the local favourites are The Forest Park Riding Stables located in Brockenhurst and The Burley Manor Riding Stables located a short drive away.

Activity Centres

There are a number of activity centres in the area. These cater for all ages and are great days out for all the family. Paultons Park is located approximately 30 minutes from the hotel. Moors Valley Country Park is set in 750 acres and has activities for all members of the family.

Fishing

On the edge of the unspoilt New Forest, Rockbourne Trout Fishery has been home to superb trout fishing for over 35 years. Six lakes spread across 52 acres of woodland and pasture provides some of the most private, secluded and beautiful fishing in the country. The valley setting has been protected against the pressures affecting much of England's countryside for years so wildlife is plentiful too.

On the water

A short drive from the hotel lies both the Southampton water and the Solent. From the coast there are views over to the Isle of Wight, which hosts even more activities.

There are plenty of opportunities to get on the water, including day and evening cruises running out of the seaside towns. In particular Lymington runs a number of short or long cruises, see www.puffincruiseslymington.com for an example of some of the cruises available. There is also the opportunity to go on fishing cruises.

On the tranquil Beaulieu River, Liquid Logistics, provide canoeing and kayaking activities for all the family, and on the Solent, Solent Rib Charter offer private rib charters. These can be active or leisurely.

Falconry

Amews Falconry is a Lantra Awards accredited centre for falconry training, located near Romsey, about 20 minutes from the Balmer Lawn Hotel. Under the tutelage of Paul Manning, an experienced falconer with more than 20 years experience.
